It Is Okay for Servers to Call Customers, Sweetheart?

Just the other day, I was out to dinner with a friend. The waitress who took our order, ended it with the words, “okay sweetheart, I will have that right out.”

When the server walked away, my friend said,  “Don’t you hate when someone who does not know you calls you, sweetheart?

They said, “yes, it is completely out of order.”

That started a great conversation about what is appropriate to call your customers and employees. I’ve been called sweetheart, baby, and a few times by folk who do not know me, and it does feel a bit offensive. So my question to you is, is it inappropriate?

With the day and era of hostile harassment, employees have to be mindful of the words that come out of their mouths and to not offend.  Though they may think absolutely nothing wrong about it, it can be offensive.  So work on your language and try to not say those words.  K?
